Fall is in the air and many homeowners choose this time of year to freshen and update their home’s interior color scheme. When looking at the thousands of color choices available from paint manufacturers, picking new colors for your home can be overwhelming and you might wonder where to even begin.  Here are a few tips to make the task a bit more manageable.

  • Consider your existing furnishings, such as your window treatments, furniture, and flooring colors.  Decide which of your home’s features are going to stay and work with those colors.
  • Consider the lighting – both natural and artificial – in each of your rooms.  Light and color go together and it’s important to take that into consideration when selecting colors.
  • Pick up a home design magazine or wander through a few home builder model homes and pay attention to the styles and colors.  If your interest and attention keep turning toward a particular one, that’s a possible color palette for you to consider.
  • When you’ve narrowed your color choices, rather than painting a color sample on your wall, paint a piece of poster board with the color.  By using a painted poster board, you can move it around the room or around your house and get a feel for how it goes with your furnishings.
  • If you want a monochromatic scheme, try using all the colors on a paint sample strip throughout your home.  A monochromatic color scheme helps to assure that the colors in your home flow from room to room.  Then paint accent walls or art niches a complimentary accent color to add interest to your paint scheme.

Most importantly, make sure that your color choices represent your personality and your likes and interests. After all, you want to create a comfortable and pleasing environment to live in!
